Saint Peter was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus and also one of the 12 apostles, at least that's a Christian tradition that all Christians agree on. Further Roman Catholic tradition says Saint Peter gave his authority to the Pope in Rome and all later popes get authority from Peter and ultimately from God. Non Catholic Christians disagree about links between Peter and later popes. The connection between Peter and Rome may have been a legend that later Roman Christians invented to strengthen their authority and the authority of the pope.

The New Testament contradicts itself about Peter as it does about very many other things. [1] [2] [3]
