PZ Myers on Christopher Hitchens [1]

Hitch is dead. We are a diminished people for the loss. There can be and should be no consolation, no soft words that encourage an illusion of heavenly rescue, no balm of lies. We should feel as we do with every death, that a part of us has been ripped from our hearts, and suffer pain and grief — and we are reminded that this is the fate we all face, that someday we too will die, and that we are all “living dyingly”, as Hitch put it so well.

Christopher Hitchens who sadly died in 2011 was an atheist and asserted frequently that Religion is both irrational and harmful.

God is not Great

Hitchens is well known for his book with the title, god Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, he maintained that religion caused problems like sexual repression and also helps rulers and others in authority hold onto power. Religious belief can make people arrogantly self righteous and superior feeling, alternatively religion can make people grovelling convinced that they are unworthy sinners. [1] There are extreme examples of religious people acting in ways which most people would call downright immoral to promote their viewpoint, just one telling example is believers increasing the spread of AIDS by falsely claiming that condoms cause the disease.

Hitchens criticizes Christians but also Muslims and argues the willingness of Muslims to kill fellow Muslims in the name of Jihad gives us reason to fear what they would do to Non-Muslims.

Hitchens quoted on morality

We (atheists) do not believe in heaven or hell, yet no statistic will ever find that without these blandishments and threats we commit more crimes of greed or violence than the faithful. -In fact, if a proper statistical inquiry could ever be made, I am sure the evidence would be the other way.- (...) We speculate that it is at least possible that, once people accepted the fact of their short and struggling lives, they might behave better toward each other and not worse. We believe with certainty that an ethical life can be lived without religion. And we know for a fact that the corollary holds true—that religion has caused innumerable people not just to conduct themselves no better than others, but to award themselves permission to behave in ways that would make a brothel-keeper or an ethnic cleanser raise an eyebrow. [2]

Immortality of a kind

The writings and videos of Christopher Hitchens live on and continue to to provide arguments that believers struggle vanely to refute.

Hitch is dead, long live the Hitch’s works. That, and progeny, are the only kinds of immortality that we know are attainable, and Christopher Hitchens deserves every moment of his. [3]
