|“||They really believe that a woman should submit to the authority of her husband. They really believe that abortion should be illegal even when the pregnancy is due to rape or incest. They really believe that there is something terribly wrong with gay people. They really believe that Jesus is soon coming back in glory for a genocidal Second Coming. They REALLY believe these things. Not much could be more damaging to fundamentalism than to let people know what they really believe.||”|
Christian Fundamentalism teaches every word of the Bible is literally true and nothing there can possibly be false. Some fundamentalists disapprove of smoking, drinking alcohol, even in moderation and even harmless exercise like dancing. though other fundamentalists may accept some or all these activities.
Basis of belief
The Bible says it, I believe it, that settles it.A large part of fundamentalist Christianity strains credulity.
Such as the notion that you need to beg a dead Jewish zombie for intercession with his psychotic, universe-creating father, due to the fact that your g'g'g'g'g'g'great grandmother ate an apple once.
The Bible says that the world was created about 6000 to 12,000 years ago so that has to be true for Christian Fundamentalists. More intelligent fundamentalists have to work hard to avoid noticing the contradictions and other problems with that.
Christian fundamentalists understand every important field of scientific endeavour, notably Cosmology and Evolution better than the top scientists in every field, see Pharyngula Wiki on Christian fundamentalism for an entertaining explanation
American Christian Fundamentalists
Sometimes American fundamentalists believe that the United States is in some way specially chosen by God and has a special mission form God, also known as Dominionism. This is hard to understand since the Bible doesn't even mention the United States. We wouldn't expect the Bible to mention America as the Bronze Age herders and Iron Age age farmers who wrote the Old Testament lived round the Mediterranean and had never heard of America. The people from the Roman Empire who wrote the New Testament knew nothing about America either. Any number of different peoples with any number of different religions try and use their religion to convince themselves that they are special.
A particular hateful group of Christian Fundamentalists that are seemingly-increasing in America are referred to as "Independent Fundamental Baptists". One of the most controversial pastors, Steven Anderson, is an Independent Baptist. He leads a think tank including similar pastors such as Roger Jimenez, David Berzins and Donnie Romero, all of which celebrated the 2016 Orlando Shooting.
